Periodontal Treatment

The word periodontal means 'around the tooth'. Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus, a hard shell of plaque. When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone. First the gums are affected, which is commonly known as Gingivits (inflammation of the gingiva, or gums), which is characterized by red, swollen, bleeding gums.  If not treated at this point, the Gingivitis can spread to the bone, and is now called Periodontitis, or Periodontal disease, which is characterized by the slow destruction of the supporting jaw bone. The effects of Gingivitis CAN BE REVERSED, meaning our gums can get back to normal. However, once the infection spreads to the bone, that bone is LOST FOREVER. The disease can still be stopped, but however much bone was lost cannot be regenerated.

Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don't know it! Most people are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages. Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggest that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, heart disease and increased risk during pregnancy. Smoking also increases the risk of developing periodontal disease.

Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.
